Mavis DeWitt

Mavis Joan DeWitt, age 81 of Montello passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. Mavis was born at home in the town of Buffalo, Marquette County on October 8, 1936 to Edward and Augusta (Kalinske) Mittlesteadt. She graduated from Montello High School and married Lacy "Herman" DeWitt at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello on July 27, 1963; he preceded her in death on December 4, 2014. Together Mavis and Herman lived and worked in Muskego for 33 years before returning to Montello in 1994. She was an active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello. Mavis was a wonderful cook and a very caring person; she always put others needs before her own. Mavis is survived by two sons: Gary (Susan) of Fredericksburg, VA and William of New Berlin and one grandson, Nicklaus. She is also survived by her brother, Delvin (Luanne) Mittlesteadt of Waunakee. Mavis is further survived by sisters-in-law: Dori Garlock, Eleanor Garbarski and Marion DeWitt as well as other extended family members. Mavis is preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings: Arlene (Harry) Hall, Willis (Joan) Mittlesteadt, Edward (Esther) Mittlesteadt as well as in-laws: Lavira (Ken) Steinhaus, Rollie Garlock, Arnold Garbarski, Bruce DeWitt and Joyce (Wayne) Rihn. A funeral service for Mavis DeWitt will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello and again at church on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until the hour of service. Pastor Pete Zietlow will officiate and burial will follow the service at the Montello City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 313 E. Montello Street, Montello, 53949 or The American Heart Association.
