Bernice Barrows

July 15, 1924 ~ April 26, 2019 (age 94)

Bernice C. Barrows, age 94 of Fond du Lac (formerly of Montello) passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at Agnesian Hospice House of Hope in Fond du Lac.  Bernice was born in Racine on July 15, 1924 to Theodore and Ida (Gabbey) Piper.  Bernice was baptized on August 9, 1924 and confirmed on May 28, 1939 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Racine by Pastor Theodore Volkert.  She married Guy Barrows on December 11, 1943 at that same church.  Together Bernice and Guy were blessed with three children; Guy preceded her in death on September 30, 2003.

Bernice worked for many years as a bookkeeper and manager at Three Sisters Clothing Store in Racine.  She was a member of the Auxiliary at the VFW Post in Sturtevant and volunteered at St. Mary’s and St. Luke’s Hospital as well as at the Christmas House in Racine.  Bernice was a faithful member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Racine and St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello when she and Guy moved to town in 1990.  She also enjoyed reading, crafts and spending time with her family.  Bernice moved to Fond du Lac in 2004 to be closer to family and became an active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Bernice is survived by two children: Ted (Wanda “Gail”) of Richland, Georgia and Kathleen (Darrick) Brink of Fond du Lac as well as eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by sister-in-law, Carol Freitag, several friends and church family members.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Donald, son-in-law, Michael Bleichner, sister, Dorothy (Earl) Reidenbach and two brothers: Theodore and Ray Piper as well as in-laws: Howard Barrows and Ralph Barrows. 

A memorial service for Bernice will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 3:00 PM at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello with Pastor Thomas Behnke officiating.  Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until the hour of service.  She will be laid to rest with her husband at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in Union Grove at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family.
