Arlene Ransom

June 28, 1921 — September 30, 2013

Arlene Anna (Radke) Ransom, age 92, formerly of Montello, Wisconsin passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter and son-in-law on September 30th 2013 in Canby, Oregon. With hospice assistance for 5 days, she was cared for by her two daughters and son-in-law. She had been living for the last three and one half years in Hope Village Assisted Living in Canby, Oregon.

She was born in her family farm home on Highway 22 on the outskirts of Montello, Wisconsin on June 28th, 1921. She was the third child of Edward H. and Anna Marie (Weckwerth) Radke. She attended Montello High School and graduated in 1938. She attended the Outagamie Rural Normal School where she received her teaching certificate in 1940. She taught elementary education in Kingston, Wisconsin Dells and Delavan from 1940-1949. She was married to Robert Penfield Ransom on August 6, 1949 at her parent's home in Montello. They had two daughters. The family lived in Darlington, Wisconsin from 1953-1972, in Monroe, Wisconsin 1972-1976 and then returned to Montello in 1976 where they retired. Arlene returned to substitute teaching in Darlington. In Monroe and Montello she worked as a receptionist and dental assistant until 1985. Arlene has been a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church for the last 37 years. She was an avid football fan and followed the Badgers and Packers even after moving to Oregon often at the home of the Ziegler's. She couldn't understand why others in her assisted living facility weren't watching Wisconsin sports. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, her parents, two brothers (Edward and Merlin) and one sister (Vivian Hadow). She is survived by two daughters: Karen (Dan) Harris of Mukilteo, Washington and Roberta (Mitch) Ziegler of Canby, Oregon; four grandchildren, Emily Ann and David Jerome Harris, Robert (Robbie) Ransom Ziegler and Aaren Elizabeth Ziegler. She is also survived by one brother, Orland Radke of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, two sister-in-laws Marion Swanson of Amery, Wisconsin and Carol Radke of Fort Meyers, Florida, and seven nieces and six nephews. Arlene was a very optimistic person who believed anything was possible through determination and persistence. She adored her family and liked nothing more than making a comfortable home where friends and family liked to visit and could enjoy her savory home cooking and family recipes. She had a strong belief in the importance of education and was an encouraging voice to her grandchildren as they pursued college educations. Her life time motto was LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE. She will be terribly missed by all who loved her. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 4th, 2013 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Montello with Pastor Tony Fuller officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Burial will follow at the Eastside Cemetery in Montello.
