Arvilla Smart

April 21, 1918 — December 15, 2009

Arvilla Ida Smart, age 91, of Montello passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 15, 2009. Arvilla was born on April 21, 1918, the daughter of Henry and Minnie Menge in the Town of Mecan, Marquette County, Wisconsin. She grew up on Lake Puckaway at Menge's Resort, which is now Good Old Days. She often spoke fondly of her days on the lake with her father Hank. Arvilla graduated early from grade school in Mecan and attended Montello High School. She liked to tell of getting her driver's license by mail at age 14 so that she could drive to school in town. Arvilla had a lifelong love of learning which she stressed to her children. She especially loved word games and crossword puzzles which she enjoyed until her passing. Arvilla married Philip Smart in 1935 in Montello, Wisconsin. While raising a family she helped out at M.M. Smart's Store, as well as Smart's Appliance and Smart's Service Station which she established with Phil. While Arvilla was accomplished at many different things her main love and focus was her family. She loved to laugh and cook for her family and seldom was it that anyone left her home without being stuffed but somehow lighter in spirit. Arvilla had a very strong faith and love for the Lord which she passed along to her children. She reminded each of us when difficulties arose to 'Put your trust where it belongs and things will be fine'. That faith and trust sustained her all through her life. She was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Montello. Arvilla is survived by her children; Carolyn Smart, Marolyn Warner, Jerry (Joan) Smart of Montello and Terry (Veronica) Smart of Madison. Grandchildren; John (Lisa), Daniel (Juljia), Andrew (Kelly) and Matthew (April) Ribar, Stephanie, Kate (fianci½ Nick Suwyn) and Mason Smart. 21 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in everlasting life by her parents Henry and Minnie Menge, husband Philip Smart, sister Irene Rux and husband Emil and grandson John Smart. The family would like to thank Pastor Zietlow for his assistance and comfort; Amy from Northland Home Health and Amy and Mary from Agnesian Hospice for their humor and compassion in her last days. A private family memorial service was held on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. Johns Lutheran Church in Montello.
