Carolyn Smart

July 31, 1935 — October 18, 2017

Carolyn Margaret Smart was called to eternal rest on October 18th, 2017 after a lengthy illness. Carolyn was born at home, to Philip and Arvilla Smart on July 31st, 1935 in Montello.

Carolyn attended and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church and School. She attended Montello High School, graduating in 1953. She continued her education at Dr. Martin Luther College (now Martin Luther College) in New Ulm, Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. She then began a career in the Lutheran teaching ministry with assignments to Benton Harbor, Plymouth and Livonia, Michigan. After many years teaching at St. Paul's Lutheran in Livonia she retired in and moved home to Montello. Carolyn loved music and was an accomplished musician, concentrating primarily on the piano and organ. Over the years she was a member of, or led choirs, played organ for church services and for her students. She also taught piano and organ and continued that into her retirement at St. Johns in Montello. Over the years she earned many awards and accolades for her music as well as her teaching. For her the reward was the joy in the music and the message and helping others to understand and experience that joy. Carolyn lived her faith and was an example and an inspiration to not only her students but also to family, friends and all who knew her. "Auntie" Carolyn was loved and adored by her many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews and was much more to them than just an "Aunt" and they were very important to her. She was survived by her brothers, Terol Smart, his wife Veronica, Madison; Jerol Smart, his wife Joan, Montello; nieces and nephews, Steffanie Smart, Katie Suwyn (Nick), Mason Smart, John Ribar (Joy), Dan Ribar (Julia), Andrew Ribar (Kelly) and Matthew Ribar (April) and many grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Philip and Arvilla Smart, sister Marolyn Warner and nephew John Smart.
