Debra Atwater

Debra “Deb” M. Atwater, age 73 of Montello passed away Monday, October 19, 2026 at her home. Debra was born in Milwaukee on May 8, 1953 to Merrill and Dolores (Strahota) Schweder. She was raised in the Village of Marquette and graduated from Markesan High School in 1971. Deb married William Atwater on February 14, 1998 at The Echoes Campground in Montello which they owned and operated. Together they lived in several states before Bill’s passing on March 19, 2015. Deb returned to Montello where she enjoyed many years of rural living, most recently she moved into town.

Deb was known to be a loyal friend, master storyteller and the rock of her family; Sunday dinners, holidays and parties will never be the same. She loved nature and had countless pets over the years. Deb touched many lives and will be remembered for her strong work ethic and caring personality.

Deb is survived by her three children: Andrea (Dan) Klapper, Jon (Amy) Dolgner and Kristina (Joe) Violetto all of Montello along with seven grandchildren: Aaron, Jesse, Tiffany, Natalee, Colin, Heidi and Andrew. She is also survived by her brother, Jon (Suzi Giesen) Schweder and canine companion, Lady Frances Fig as well as many extended family members.

In addition to her parents and husband, Deb is also preceded in death by her grandson, Sean Klapper, siblings: Richard Schweder and Kristine (John) Wassong as well as canine companions: Sophie and Sassy.

A memorial visitation will be held for Debra Atwater on Friday, October 23, 2026 from 3:00 until 6:00 PM at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello. There will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family or Donate Life Of Wisconsin, 17145 J W Bluemound Road #179, Brookfield, WI 53005.
