Delia Wenkman

March 15, 1925 — August 2, 2017

Delia Olive Wenkman, age 92 of Oxford passed away at Harris Villa on August 2, 2017. Delia was born on March 15, 1925 in Big Springs, Wisconsin to Irving and Martha (Plutowski) Griffin. She graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in 1943 and furthered her education, graduating from Waushara County Normal School in 1945 and later attended the Madison Area Technical Collage for Food Service Management. Delia married Edwin Nelson in 1945, he preceded her in death in August of 1965. She married Darrell Phillips in 1966, he preceded her in death in August of 1981. Delia later married Jim Wenkman in October of 1983 and he preceded her in death in May of 1998. While raising her family, Delia and Eddie owned and operated the Seven Gables Restaurant in Westfield and later Nelson's CafAC. in Oxford from 1955 until 1977. Delia was well known for all of her homemade pies. Delia later managed the Bottle Stop in Oxford for several years. She was a member of the VFW 6003 Auxiliary and served as a Chaplin as well as the St. Ann's Women's Fellowship Organization. Delia enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and also playing euchre with everyone. Delia is survived by four daughters: Donna (Skitch) Mackenzie of Madison, Roberta (Tom) Roos of Oxford, Martha (Kim) Gaffney of Oxford and Patricia (Randy) Mitmoen of Madison as well as twelve grandchildren: Todd and Tammy Roos, Chip, Chad (Deb) and Dana MacKenzie, Kimberly (Jon) Mast, Katie Bignell, Matt Bignell, Abbey (Chris) Stenske, Jessica (Dusty) Hermanson and Justin (Laurel) Mitmoen and 18 great-grandchildren: Hannah, Jensen, Ellie, Fisher, Kaden, Zander, Treyten, Cooper, Emery, William, Alexis, Noah, Gracie, Ryan, Tyler, Mitchell, Taylor and Beckett. She is also survived by siblings: John (Phyllis) Griffin, Pat Griffin, Mike (Evelyn) Griffin, Dennis (Guadalupe) Griffin, Thomas (Karen) Griffin, Margaret Cartwright, Helen Cox, Esther Bingham, Delores (Tom) Hilgendorf, Barbara Buye and Jeanette (Wayne) Phillips as well as sisters-in-laws: Ellen Griffin, Elizabeth Phillips and Dorothy Morgan. Delia is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members from the Nelson, Phillips and Wenkman families. Delia was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son, Joseph Nelson, daughter, Mary Nelson and infant sister, Geraldine Griffin. She was also preceded in death by brothers: Jimmy Griffin and Robert Griffin, sister, Mary Schwanz, brothers- in-law: Ted Cartwright, Fred Cox and Donnie Schwanz as well as sister-in-law, Georgia Griffin. We will always remember her loving and friendly personality and how her smile and quick wit brought happiness to everyone she met. The family would like to thank Dr. Musa, Agnesian Hospice and a very special thank you to Nan and the caring staff at Harris Villa for the wonderful care and friendship they provided to Delia. A Mass of Christian Burial for Delia will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Briggsville. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Oxford and again at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Father Gary Krahenbuhl and Father Paulraj Sellam will concelebrate the mass and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family for a memorial that will be established in Delia's name.
