Dolores Schlaefer

Dolores C. Schlaefer, age 79 of Montello, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2014 at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. She was born to Nicholas and Mary (Ullrich) Schlaefer on October 19, 1934. Dolores attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and School and Montello High School for one year. At age 15 she left home to join the Racine Dominicans. Dolores finished high school at St. Catherine's High and then attended Dominican College. After four years of formation she was solemnly received into the Dominican Order and took the name of Sr. Eucharista. Dolores continued her studies in education and music at Alverno, Cardinal Stritch College, UW-Milwaukee and Indiana University, joining choruses and choirs wherever they had one. After teaching in catholic schools for 13 years and being teacher-organist in each parish, she left the Order and was employed in the Milwaukee Public Schools for the next 30 years, interrupting them for a one year sabbatical to obtain a reading license. Dolores then became an itinerant teacher and taught only reading to small groups in a number of Milwaukee Public Schools. In 1997 she retired and moved back to live on the family homestead in Montello until she sold the house and moved into the Montello Senior Village Apartments.

Dolores had a deep love for her family and loved to sing in harmony with them. She loved classical music, including listening to the opera every Saturday afternoon on the radio. Dolores enjoyed watching figure skating, taking part in religious conversations, singing in the choir, playing piano and organ, observing nature, studying the etymology of words, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles and visiting Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Dolores is survived by two brothers: Bernard (Lea) Schlaefer of Wauwatosa and Robert Schlaefer of Montello; sister in law, Elizabeth Schlaefer; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers: Rev. Richard Schlaefer, Rev. Joseph "Padre" Schlaefer and Raymond "Duke" Schlaefer; sisters, Genevieve, Sr. Ann, Marie and Imelda Collins; brother in law, Robert Collins and sister in law, Carol Schlaefer. A Mass of Christian Burial for Dolores will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Father David Carrano will Concelebrate the Mass with Father David Carrano concelebrated the Mass with Msgr. John Hebl, Fr. James McNamee, and Fr. John Schmitz, and burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, town of Montello.
