Ernest Schmitz

September 30, 1930 — May 28, 2019

Ernest “Ernie” Carl Schmitz , age 88 of Montello passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019 surrounded by his family at his home.  Ernie was born at home in the town of Buffalo, Marquette County, WI to Herman and Wilhelmina (Tonn) Schmitz on September 30, 1930.  He served his country as a member of the United States Marines from 1950 until 1953; while on leave from the service he married Joan Gray on Valentine’s Day of 1952 in Montello and from that union came eight children. Joan preceded Ernie in death on January 17, 2019.

Ernie was a lifelong resident of Montello and known as “A Master of All Trades.”  While always farming, he was employed at several other places throughout his life such as: Speed Queen in Ripon, Marquette County Highway Department, Shields Creamery and even owned the Sore “S” Saloon in Manchester.   He also served as a chairman for the town of Packwaukee and his door was always open for a cup of coffee.  Ernie had an infectious smile and sense of humor and will be remembered for his work ethic and the love he had for his family.

Ernie leaves behind seven children: Carl (Darlene) of Reedsburg, Dale (Laurie) of Oxford, Bruce (Lianna) of Westfield, Glenn (Kristi) of Westfield, Judy (Jeff) Mateske of Montello, Lisa (Lee) Ollendorf of Westfield and Ann (Joe) Prescott of Adams, MN.  He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and seventeen and a half great-grandchildren.  Ernie is further survived by sister in law, Beverly Schmitz as well as other extended family members and many friends.

Ernie is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Joan, son, Randy, daughter-in-law, Debra and brother, Erwin.

A memorial service for Ernest “Ernie” Schmitz will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the hour of service.  Pastor Julie Krahn will preside and immediately following the service inurnment with full military honors by American Legion Post #351 of Montello will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, town of Packwaukee.   In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family for a memorial that will be established in Ernest’s name.
