Francis Becwar

Francis Joseph Becwar, age 75 of Montello passed away peacefully Sunday morning, January 5, 2014 at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. He was born in Prairie du Chien, WI on September 17, 1938 to Joseph and Agnes (Fritsche) Becwar. He attended a country grade school and graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1956 and later married Janice Miller at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa on June 9, 1962.
Growing up in the hilly country of Southwestern Wisconsin on his father's farm prepared him for his life's work with the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) as a technician. He started part-time with SCS in 1956 in Gays Mills and became full-time in 1958. In 1961, he was transferred to Monroe and then to Montello in 1965; Francis worked a total of 35 years for SCS, retiring in September of 1993. He received many rewards for his outstanding work. Following heart surgery in 1995 and wanting to keep busy; he went to work for the Green Lake Conference Center in the maintenance department, retiring in 2003. Being outdoors was his favorite place to be. He liked gardening, planting trees, restoring an old Jeep, Nascar racing, sports and spending time with his family. Francis leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Janice, two daughters: Robyn (John) Hackett of Arena and Jill Towery of Ripon, four grandchildren: Lindsey and Alyssa Towery and Evan and Alec Hackett as well as one great-grandson, Levi. He is also survived by two sisters: Rose Bauer and Marie Becwar as well as many nieces and nephews. Francis is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marcella and three brothers-in-law. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Father David Carrano will preside and burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, town of Montello. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family. Crawford Funeral and Cremation Service of Montello and Oxford is Honored to be serving the family. www.CrawfordFH.com
