Fujiko Gunderson, age 85 of Montello passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Monday, November 11, 2024. Fujiko was born in Ginowan City, Okinawa, Japan on June 17, 1939; the daughter of Setsuko Nishime. While working on base she met a young Seabee named Gale, and on April 27, 1961 - they were united in marriage. They would later be blessed with two children, Sherri and Arlen, and spent the next twenty years living on Navy bases both home and abroad. Upon retirement in 1977 they moved to Montello to be closer to Gale’s family, where she would spend the remainder of her life pursuing her true passion – family.
If Fuji had another love besides family, it would have to involve food. Whether it was her love for crab legs or her need to make sure that every person that visited her home sat at the table until they couldn’t eat anymore. She also loved caring for the household and especially her plants.
Fujiko is survived by her daughter, Sherri (Chuck) Harsh of Montello as well as six grandchildren: Kalani (Gary) Alberts, Dale Gunderson, Mallerie (Travis) Gunderson, Kory (Kelsey) Harsh, Jordon Gunderson, and Kitara (Jesse Li) Harsh; thirteen great-grandchildren; special friends: Yoshiko Strain, Shinko Dary, Yoshiko Butler; as well as other extended family members.
Fujiko is preceded in death by her mother, Setsuko, husband, Gale, sister Miyoko, brothers: Shigeo and Yoshiharu and her son, Arlen.
Honoring Fujiko’s wishes, she will be laid to rest privately at the Westfield East Cemetery.
Crawford Funeral and Cremation Service of Montello and Oxford is honored to be serving the family. www.CrawfordFH.com
