Gary Sweeney

Gary G. Sweeney, of Montello left us too soon at the age of 66 after a courageous battle with cancer. He drifted away peacefully at home on Tuesday evening, February 1, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born on June 13, 1944 in Milwaukee to Lawrence and Shirley (Lorentz) Sweeney. Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1962 until 1965; serving thirteen of those months in Korea. After leaving the military he worked at Superior Die Set as a steel cutter for nine years before moving on to a job he truly loved at the Milwaukee County Parks Department where he met many of his lifelong friends. Retiring in 1995 to Montello, Gary still worked for White Lake Country Club for 10 seasons. He also enjoyed cooking, working in his yard, hunting, fishing and most of all spending time with his family and friends. Gary is survived by his wife and best friend, Rozanne who never left his side, two children: Scott (Kim) of Muskego, Debi (Mike) Sweeney of New Berlin as well as two grandchildren: Kristen and Ryan Sweeney. He is also survived by siblings: Janice Cornwell of Tomahawk, Karen Genrich of West Allis and Dan (Kathy) Piotrowski of New Berlin and also step-mother, MaryAnn Sweeney, father-in-law, Ray Ihrke and brother-in-law, Bill (Joy) Ihrke. Gary is further survived by many nieces, nephews, others relatives and many friends. Preceding Gary in death are his parents, step-father, Harry Piotrowski, mother-in-law, Viola Ihrke and brother-in-law, Don Cornwell. A celebration of Gary's life will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Pastor Sue Bryce will preside and full military honors by American Legion Post 351 will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Budda-Box Fight Against Cancer, P.O. Box 91, Westfield, WI 53964. Crawford Funeral Home of Montello is serving the family. www.CrawfordFH.com
