Graydon Gray

April 15, 1932 — February 18, 2014

Graydon Ross Gray, Sr., age 81 of Montello passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, February 18, 2014 at his home. Graydon was born in Montello to Carl and Ella (Ross) Gray on April 15, 1932. He graduated from Montello High School in 1950 and went on to serve his country as a member of the United States Army. He married Lorraine Mininni in Montello on November 28, 1954; she preceded him in death on May 30, 1997. Graydon was a very gifted person; he could build almost anything and had the vision to create works of art out of wood. Not only was he a talented wood carver; he also painted and donated many of his works to various organizations. Graydon never sat still during his life; he planted over 20,000 trees by hand and was always thinking of his next new invention. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and wild life. Graydon was a member of American Legion Post 351 of Montello as well as the Montello Masonic Lodge. His caring spirit, sense of humor and the love he had for his family won't be soon forgotten. Graydon is survived by his two children: Graydon Jr. of Phillips and Victoria (Ty) Simpson of Salado, TX as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving companion, Donna Colton and four siblings: Don (BJ), Joan "Susie" (Ernie) Schmitz, Bob (Kay), and Diane (Lynn) Dhein. Graydon is further survived by his sister-in-law, Donna Gray as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Graydon is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lorraine and two siblings: Russell and Donna Jean. A funeral service will be held for Graydon on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Clint Rudesill will preside and burial with full military honors by American Legion Post 351 of Montello will follow the service at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Montello. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Montello Historic Preservation Society where his quarry carvings are proudly displayed. Please designate elevator fund, P.O.
