Harold Cardo

Harold H. Cardo, age 92 of Montello died Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at his home. Harold was born on March 24, 1919 in Butler, WI to Rinehold and Helene (Bolster) Cardo. He married Joanna Spanovich on September 22, 1964 in Waukegan, IL. His many accomplishments included: his own quintet that performed at his parents Log Cabin Ballroom in Brookfield, WI as well as playing the E-flat saxophone and the clarinet. He started working with Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1941 as a Locomotive Fireman; in 1948 he was promoted to Locomotive Engineer. While working for C&NW railroad he carried troop trains between Chicago and Fort Sheridan. He resigned from C&NW in 1952 on his own accord. From there he returned to follow his parents in the bar business, owning his own tavern named 'Harold's Tap.' In 1957, he returned to the railroad as an employee of the CMStP&P railroad working as a yardman; three months later he was promoted to brakeman and in 1961 promoted to conductor. He remained a conductor between Milwaukee and Chicago and Fox Lake and Chicago until he retired in 1980; retaining his membership in the UTU until his death. Upon retirement, they relocated to Arkansas until 1985 and then returned to Illinois and in 1993 permanently moved to the Montello, WI area. While in Montello, he remained active with the zoning committees by giving information that he felt was important for the upcoming changes. Harold is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joanna and two children: Constance Stoner of Milwaukee and Ronald (Ann) of Oshkosh. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Michael (Faithann) Stoner, Susan Stoner, Brian and Laura Cardo as well as two great-grandchildren: Shannon and Erin Stoner. Harold is further survived by the mother of his two children, Barbara (Schmidt) Cardo. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Michael Stoner, grandparents, Emma (Thalacher) and William F. Cardo, many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. Following Harold's wishes, he will be cremated and no services will be held at this time. Crawford Funeral Home of Montello is serving the family. www.CrawfordFH.com
