Harold Adolph Schmudlach, age 82 of Montello passed away Saturday, September 12, 2026 surrounded by his family on his Mecan Township Farm that he so dearly loved. Harold was born at home in the Town of Mecan, Marquette County to Adolph and Edna (Peterson) Schmudlach on December 25, 1943. He attended Montello High School and was united in marriage to Rosalie Stelter in March of 1974. Together they were blessed with three children.
Harold was a devoted family man and a proud fourth-generation steward of the land, dedicating his life to the organic family farm established in 1857. His lifelong connection to the soil began at the tender age of 14, when he first stepped into the fields and took his place in the daily rhythm of milking cows alongside his elders. At only 16, Harold took over full control of the farming operation. For nearly seven decades, Harold poured his heart and calloused hands into preserving his family’s rich agricultural legacy, championing sustainable, organic practices long before they were popular. Harold was also a good neighbor. When neighbors needed to borrow equipment or had a repair that required welding, Harold graciously pitched in, even when he was busy. Harold loved touring the farm in his UTV. He remained active on the farm until his peaceful passing, leaving behind a profound testament to endurance, deep roots, and a life beautifully lived in harmony with the land.
Harold had a fondness for vanilla ice cream and was known for eating a pint by himself when Rosalie wasn't around to reign in his sweet tooth.
Harold leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Rosalie and three children: Gabriel (Kathy), Ian (Angie) and Emilie (Joe) Marwitz all of Montello as well as nine grandchildren: Annabelle, Samuel (Abby), Silas, Eli, Margaret, Noah, Clara, Lillian and Benjamin. He is also survived by a great-granddaughter, Sofia.
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Oliver and siblings: Rudy, Rosie, Onie and Eddie.
