Helen Margaret Hughes, age 98 of Montello passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at her home with her son by her side. Helen was born on July 24, 1927 in Kenosha to John and Mary (Skoviak) Machulsky. She was united in marriage to Robert Hughes on January 12, 1946 and began raising their family in Kenosha and transitioned to Montello in 1981. They enjoyed 52 year together until his passing in November of 1998.
Helen was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello; she sang in the choir, was a mass server, religious education teacher, Eucharistic minister, sacristan and funeral dinner cook for 14 years. She loved the people of her church and in Helen’s words “They were like a second family.”
Helen was an active active member of the Recycled Teenagers Kitchen Band for 12 years which played for nursing homes, senior centers, schools and other organizations; she was the master of ceremony of songs, music and jokes. Helen served as a board member of the Senior Center in Montello. With a background in upholstery, she volunteered for Montello Schools in the Art Department. In 1990, Helen took up wood carving and earned many blue ribbons for her projects. She enjoyed her life and loved Montello and would to Thank her friends and family for being a part of her life.
Helen is survived by her four sons: David (Karen) of Hancock, Thomas (Jan) of Waterford, Kenneth (Linda) of Sorasota, FL and Patrick (Rhonda) of Montello as well as twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters: Dorothy, Hattie, Connie, LaVerne and Betty.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Helen Hughes will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello. Visitation will held from 9:00 AM until the hour of service. Father Savio Yerasani will preside and inurnment at the parish cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 277 E. Montello Street, Montello, WI 53949.
