Hollis Elliott

November 7, 1937 — May 10, 2025

Oxford

Hollis William Elliott, age 87 of Oxford passed away peacefully after a long illness on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on November 7, 1937 in Brooks, Wisconsin, Town of New Chester, Adams County to Harold Hollis Elliott and Cecil Gladys (Beals) Elliott. He attended Brooks Grade School, Oxford High School for 2 years and graduated from Adams-Friendship High School. On May 3, 1958 he married Lilas Hayes of Oxford and they were wed for 67 years and raised 3 daughters: Rita, Dina and Jodi.

During his teenage years, he helped neighboring farmers with field work, planting and harvesting crops also milking cows and worked on the family farm. Hollis’ heart and love was that of a farmer. Always planting a large garden each year and growing way more than the family could use. The remainder was given away to neighbors, relatives and friends.

Hollis was a sportsman, playing baseball with Pete’s Country Store team for several years and later on an Oxford slow pitch softball team. He enjoyed scenic trips through western Wisconsin, especially the Gays Mills apple orchards and surrounding hills and valleys.

Hollis entered the job market as a truck driver for Warren Coon Trucking hauling harvested peas and sweet corn to canning factories as well as materials for road construction and building projects. His uncle asked him to join his house building crew as a carpenter. A spark was ignited and he spent the rest of his working life as a carpenter being employed by Coddington Builders and Stroede Brother’s Construction and Lumber Yard. Several years later, he started and formed his own construction business. He worked with several young men as a mentor who decided carpentry as their trade.

Hollis was a politician with a purpose, giving several years of service as Supervisor for the Town of Oxford. Many of those years as Chairman. He was elected as a member of the Marquette County Board of Supervisors and served on many committees some as chairman. These positions were serious for him and he served with fairness and dedication.

Hollis is survived by his wife, Lilas and three daughters: Rita (Brian) Goodhue, Dina (Ed) Johnson and Jodi (Arnie McDonald) Elliott all of Oxford. He is also survived by grandchildren: Dacia (Travis) Thomley, Dawn (Tom) Hockerman, Aaron (Becky) Johnson, Eric (fiance, Megan Poorman) Johnson and Dillon (Jayme) Roller as well as great-grandchildren: Jakob and Kayla Roller, Preslee, Jessee, Weslee Roller, Henry Hockerman, Jade and Jordyn Johnson. Hollis is further survived by his sister, Beverly Fry and brothers-in-law: Lowell (Judy) Hayes and Larry Hayes.

Hollis is preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Betty, Lorraine, Valerie and Edna and grandson, Preston Roller.
