Lacy Herman DeWitt Jr., age 85 of Montello passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, December 4, 2014 at his home. Herman was born in Fond du Lac to Lacy C. and Viola (Kroenke) DeWitt Sr. on December 5, 1928. He served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1950 until 1952; earning a Silver Star medal. Herman married Mavis Mittlesteadt at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello on July 27, 1963 and they were blessed with two sons. Herman worked for Allis Chalmers in West Allis and later worked for Sears Robuck as a truck driver in Wauwatosa. In 1994, Herman and Mavis returned to Montello. He was an active member of both American Legion Post 351 of Montello and the Princeton VFW. Herman was a member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church of Montello and enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles as well as sudoku.

Herman leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Mavis and two sons: Gary (Susan) of Fredericksburg, VA and William of New Berlin and one grandson, Nicklaus. He is also survived by three sisters: Lavira Steinhaus of Rio, Dori (Rollie) Garlock of Briggsville and Eleanor Garbarski of Grand Marsh as well as his sister-in law, Marion DeWitt of Pardeeville. Herman is further survived by his brother-in-law, Delvin (Luanne) Mittlesteadt of Waunakee as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. Herman is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bruce, sister, Joyce (Wayne) Rihn as well as two brothers-in-law: Ken Steinhaus and Arnold Garbarski. A funeral service for Herman will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello and again on Tuesday from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. at the church. Pastor Pete Zietlow will officiate and burial with full military honors will follow the service at the Montello City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 313 E. Montello Street, Montello, 53949.
