Leon Maass

March 3, 1942 — May 17, 2015

Leon Kenneth Maass, age 73 of Montello passed away unexpectedly early Sunday morning, May 17, 2015 at the VA Hospital in Madison. Leon was born in Portage to Kenneth and Ruth (Rumann) Maass on March 3, 1942. He graduated from Portage High School in 1960. Leon served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He worked as a truck driver for several area companies. On December 31, 1993 he married the love of his life, Kay (Rietmann) Haynes. Leon loved his family and especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming and he could always be found at an auction just about every Saturday morning. In his retirement, he enjoyed being an Amish driver. Leon will be remembered for his sense of humor and his outgoing personality.

Leon is survived by his wife, Kay and five children: Travis (Jennifer), Tyler, Cody (Heidi) all of Montello, Kris (Jay) Mosbrucker of Morgan Hill, CA and Janet Otten of Brookfield. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Alexis, Aubrey, Noah, Kyle, Eliza, Ariel, Emily and William as well as three sisters: Sharon Catlin, Patricia Johnson, Pam Ebert and one brother, Jim (Beth) Hitchcock. He is further survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Leon is preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Mark Otten and two brothers: Tom (Betty) Hitchcock and David Hitchcock. A funeral service for Leon will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Pete Zietlow and Pastor R.F. Westendorf will preside together and burial with full military honors will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, town of Caledonia, Columbia County. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family for a memorial in Leon's name.
