Mary Custer

Mary Ann Custer, age 93 of Oregon, formerly of Montello passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, January 20, 2011 at Sienna Meadows CBRF in Oregon. Mary Ann was born on November 5, 1917 in the Town of Oregon, Dane County to John and Clara (Ellsworth) Manion. She attended elementary school at the Fisher Valley School then graduated from Oregon High School and received a degree in Home Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mary Ann married Alton 'Babe' Custer at Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church in Oregon on June 24, 1940. As newlyweds in the early 1940's Mary Ann helped Babe operate the Kroger Grocery Store in Oregon and also worked many years as a food service supervisor. She was the president of the Hospital, Institute, and Educational Food Service Society. Other passion's Mary Ann will be remembered for are her amazing green thumb, cooking abilities and also sewing. Survivors include: two children, William of Park Falls and Ann of Sun Prairie, as well as four grandchildren: Brian (Lori Houle) Custer of Sun Prairie, Jesse Custer of Portland, OR, Joe Everard of Salt Lake City, UT and Amy Everard of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by three great-grandsons: Riley, Chris and Sam Custer. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Babe and son, Robert 'Jack' Custer as well as two brothers: Louis and Paul Manion. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Montello. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at church. Father Michael Richel will officiate and burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Montello. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sienna Meadows CBRF, 898 Park St., Oregon 53575 or Hospice Care Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison 53711. Crawford Funeral Home of Montello is serving the family.
