Peter "Pete" David Matteoni Jr., age 79 of Montello passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, January 4, 2015 at his home. Pete was born in Highland Park, IL on March 7, 1935 to Peter and Margaret (Gianesin) Matteoni Sr. He married Margaret Haling on November 7, 1953 and together they raised their four daughters in Coloma; Margaret preceded Pete in death on May 9, 1989. Pete later married Linda Sundstrom on September 27, 1997 in California and together they resided in rural Montello for the past seventeen years. Pete was an avid sportsman that loved to hunt, fish and trap. He loved the outdoors and nature and taught his four daughters his love of nature. "Papa Gallo" is greatly loved by Shauntz, Bug, Bap and Goog who will always remember his special advice such as: "Never trust the quiet ones", "It beats the alternative", "That's the way the old tomato squirts", "Only the shadow knows", "It's not his fault, but its not mine either", "We're here because we're here", and a more recent one "I'm a bit past my expiration date!". Pete was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Montello and will be remembered as one of the toughest men we ever knew, proven by living in a farmhouse with 5 women and one bathroom. Pete is survived by his loving wife, Linda and four daughters: Marie (Harlan) Lehman of Montello, Rita (Andy) Lovell of Markleeville, CA, Margie (Martin) Harrison of Reno, NV, and Gina (Matt) O'Grady of Markleeville, CA as well as stepsons: Tim (Debbie) Sheets and Darren (Vicki) Sheets both of Rockford, IL and stepdaughter, Dana (Scott) Barker of Merrimac. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Pete is further survived by two brothers: John (Mary) of New Glarus and Dan (Denise) of Antioch, IL as well as brothers-in-law: Chuck (Dolly) Haling, Eddie (Jean) Haling both of Antioch, IL and George Pahlke of Mauston. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, first wife and mother of his children, Margaret and sister, Margaret Pahlke.
