Raymond "Ray" W. Niven, age 76 of Montello passed away unexpectedly Friday, November 21, 2014 at his home. Ray was born in Norridge Township, Cook County, IL on June 11, 1938 to John "Herb" and Hilma (Nordby) Niven. He served his country as a member of the United States Army and later married Eileen Fitzgerald on May 30, 1959 at St. Priscilla's Catholic Church in Chicago. Ray retired from Ultra Carbide, Inc. as a tool and die maker after 26 years of faithful employment; he and Eileen permanently moved to Montello in 1999.
Ray was a longtime snowmobiler and member of the Montello Yetis Snowmobilers Club as well as an active member of the Princeton ATV Club. He also enjoyed vacationing and camping year around throughout the United States and Canada. Ray was an active member of American Legion Post 351 of Montello and earlier in life served as a volunteer fireman for Leyden Township, IL. He was very proud of his '59 Chevy pickup. Ray was a diehard Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and loved his family and title of grandpa. Ray leaves behind his wife, Eileen and four children: John (Debbie) of Crystal Lake, IL, Katherine (Curt) Wadsworth of Anchorage, AK, David (Dawn) of Lake in the Hills, IL and Kenneth (Leslie) of Elk Grove Village, IL as well as ten grandchildren: Brittany (Andrea), Ryan, Katie, Danielle (fiancAC. Odin), Dana, Cody, Keegan, Mike, Jesse and Kyle. He is also survived by his niece, Marcia (Scotty) and nephew, Scott (Carol). Ray is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Melvin (Mary Lou). A funeral service for Ray will be held on Monday, November 24, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Crawford Funeral Home of Montello. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Pastor Clint Rudesill will officiate and following the traditional funeral service, American Legion Post 351 of Montello will provide Military Honors. Inurnment will be private.
