Robert Zellmer

June 29, 1924 — February 3, 2010

Robert R. Zellmer, age 85, of Montello, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening February 3, 2010 at the Berlin Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 29, 1924 in Montello to Robert and Malvina (Mayville) Zellmer. He graduated from Montello High School and then joined the United States Army. He valiantly served his country in World War II in the Europe theatre; he was involved in four major battles, starting at Normandy Beach and ending at the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning from World War II he married Veronica 'Jean' Rataczak on May 21, 1955. Robert enjoyed working around his home and spending time with his family. He retired after a long career as a security guard at the Badger Ammunitions plant in Baraboo. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and also the American Legion Post 351, both of Montello. He spent the last five years of his life in Wautoma to be closer to family. Survivors include: one daughter, Roxanne (Phillip) Walther of Wautoma, and two grandsons: Christopher and Nicholas Walther. He is also survived by his niece, Donna Hanson of New York. Preceding Robert in death are his parents and wife, along with one brother and sister. Following Robert's wishes, he was cremated and private family services will be held. He will be inurned in the Montello City Cemetery at a later date.
