Listen to Obituary

Steven Daniel Hankins, age 69, of Montello passed away peacefully on Monday, July 6, 2026, surrounded by family.

Steve was born on August 30, 1956 in Oak Park, IL to Daniel and Theresa (Maturo) Hankins.

Steve grew up in Chicago and was a diehard Bears and Cubs fan. He met the love of his life, Terry (Shermer) at summer camp and they were married two years later on June 18, 1977. They recently celebrated 49 years of marriage. They spent 40 years serving at Sky Lodge Christian Camp where they shared the love of Jesus to thousands of kids throughout the years. They retired in 2024 and spent time traveling in the south volunteering at Christian camps and sharing their love for camp ministry.

Steve was a man of faith. He was an active member, Sunday school teacher and elder at Grace Presbyterian Church. He was a natural leader that lead by example. He had a larger than life personality and loved to goof around in any situation. He made people feel loved. His family and friends have never once had to question his love, he showed it daily through words and actions. He found so much joy in all of his grandkids. Whether it was cheering them on at sporting events, concerts or plays, watching music videos on You Tube, going on 4-wheeler rides, making rubber band guns, or just spending time with them, he loved being their Papa.

Steve is survived by his loving wife Terry, two daughters, Lisa (Mike) Tekautz, Hannah (Eric) Zellmer, and six grandchildren, Antonio, Ella, Owen, Giovanni, Gunner and Simone. He is also survived by his siblings Mark (Catherine), Beth (Dave), Randy (Linda), Glen (Heather) and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel & Theresa Hankins.

A funeral service for Steve will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Grace Presbyterian Church in Pardeeville, WI.
